The Ashby-Brandon-Evansville Cross Country teams ran at New London Thursday night. It was hot, windy, and humid, and due to poor weather moving in, the JV race was cancelled.

“With the weather, it seemed to zap the energy of the runners and many struggled to perform how they did in Long Prairie,” commented A-B-E Head Coach Robert Bosma. “I was impressed with the mentality of my team and how they pushed through the pain of the race.”

Ashley Paulson was the only varsity girl to complete the race. Quynn Behrens started, but couldn't overcome an injury.

“Very similar to Monday, Ashley ran a smart race. She was able to get behind a small pack and let them break the wind for her for a while,” said Bosma. “This allowed her to get a good push for the final stretch and finish top ten.”

For the guys, Kenneth Spielman ran his first varsity race. “He has been on the Junior High team, but I wanted to give him a chance to prove his worth on Varsity,” noted Bosma. “He had a great run and proved how his work ethic in practice is giving him strength on the course.

Micah Fossell had a strong start and was running near the front of the race for a while, unfortunately, he had a leg cramp that he pushed through. With about half a mile left, I watched him grab his left leg and almost go down. He told me it was a cramp and he continued on obviously hurt. It really showed his inner strength that he maintained a top twenty finisher being hurt. Abram Fossell also had a great race and looked strong. He was been struggling in practice the last week and he looked comfortable and strong. Kian Gackle, who rolled an ankle in the last meet, looked very comfortable and composed through most of the meet. His ankle is still bothering him some at practice, but it didn't seem to slow him down at all last night.”

Coach Bosma continued, “Jayden Hoidahl, Wes Siira, and Logan Froemming took their experience into the meet and worked with packs. They let other runners break the wind and strategically surged to make their move on corners and hills.”
