The Brandon-Evansville Chargers dropped the opening set to Ashby 25-13 on Thursday night, but followed that first set loss with three straight wins, 25-23, 25-21 and 25-14 to claim a 3-1 volleyball victory in Evansville.

“After a good practice on Wednesday, with conversations and reps on how we need to improve our play, we felt coming in we would be ready to take steps forward, however, we started very slow on the night and had to make some player substitutions in order to find any semblance of order on the court,” said B-E Head Coach Kelly Olson.  “We had missed serves, poor hitting, and ball handling errors defensively and offensively.  We had a lot of unforced errors that allowed Ashby to easily take set one.  Set two saw the set start much the same.  We decided to get some other kids in the match.  Kendall Hoidahl came in to set for us and did a good job getting the offense going.  As set two carried on our offensive efficiently got a little better, but just barely.  The girls came back in set two and squeaked out the win.  As the night went on we got a little better each set.  All night long we struggled in one facet or another.  We are still waiting to see what we do in practice turn up in a match consistently.  Our inconsistency plagues us.  We are having to work much harder than we should to score.  We need to bring our practice to the match.”

The Chargers were led by Kylee Dingwall (15 kills, 7 digs, 2 blocks, 1 ace), Taylor Yeats (22/22 serving, 5 aces, 5 kills, 28 digs), EmmaLee Brethorst (15/15 serving, 5 aces,3 kills, 3 digs, 2 blocks), Gretchen Bredberg (17/17 serving, 1 ace, 10 digs), Sydney Schaefer (2 aces, 4 kills, 6 digs, 14 set assists), Olivia Otto (15/17 serving, 2 aces, 5 digs) and Kendall Hoidahl (6 set assists, 4 digs).  The Chargers served up 16 aces as a team and served 93.1% on the night.

“We came out battling tonight with a fresh line up after an injury on Saturday to sophomore starter Haleigh Brendmoen, said Ashby Head Coach Hayley Stevens.  “We worked on a new arrangement and moved key players around the rotation. These girls really stepped up and I couldn't have been prouder how they came together and really made things happen. The second and third games were close and we missed crucial serves and had a few tough double touch calls that too away our rhythm. We moved around the court and attacked the ball often which kept things moving. B-E used the cross court attack to move our defenders and we struggled to get significant blocks when we needed them.”

Statistical leaders for Ashby were Catherine Koefod (14/16 serving, 2 aces, 21 assists, 7 digs), Celi Nelson (15/16 serving, 2 aces, 4 kills, 16 digs), Kaylee Schlundt (17/18 serving, 1 ace, 5 kills, 1 block), Kyra Aamot (12/15 serving, 9 digs), Lucy Ohren (8/10 serving, 2 aces, 12 digs), Ryleigh Brendmoen (7/9 serving, 2 aces, 13 kills, 1 block, 27 digs), BrookeLinn Finkelson (1 kills, 2 assists, 3 digs) and Livy Johnson (2 kills, 1 digs).  The Arrows served 86.9% as a team.

Ashby will head to Glenwood to participate in the Minnewaska Area Tournament on Saturday and will then host Parkers Prairie on Tuesday night.
