The Brandon-Evansville Chargers were 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-15) winners of Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in a Little Eight Conference volleyball contest on Friday night.

“Tonight I want to recognize Bailey Schaefer earning the school’s first 1000 kill player,” said Brandon-Evansville Head Coach Kelly Olson.  “What a wonderful accomplishment for a great volleyball player and better kid, her efforts throughout the years has been tremendous.  Weight room at 6:15am each week, summer training, and relentless dedication to the sport make her someone all the younger players can and should learn from if they want to be successful on and off the court.  We are so proud of Bailey, and all the other players who have helped her achieve her goal. Congratulations!”

The Chargers were led by Schaefer (12 kills, 10 digs, 15/17 serving, 2 aces), Mikenna Pattrin (6 kills, 4 blocks, 8/11 serving, 1 ace), EmmaLee Brethorst (4 kills, 1 block), Korrie Randt (23 set assists, 4 digs, 8/8 serving), Gretchen Bredberg (6 digs, 10/11 serving, 1 aces), Taylor Yeats (10/11 serving) and Olivia Otto (13/15 serving, 3 aces).

“With such a long layoff due to weather we knew whomever came out on top would depend on a few things: serving, efficiency, and communication,” stated Coach Olson. “It took us awhile to get all three of those areas working at the same time, but when we did it was good volleyball.  Hillcrest was going to be scrappy, we knew that.   I don’t know how many digs they had on the night but we have seen balls that usually go down suddenly coming back to us.  We also saw a team attack us and hit angle and line with success.  I know the final set scores do not reflect the level of play, but HLA was as good as opponent as we have seen this year. Possibly the best defensive effort we have witnessed.  I think the difference was at the second half of each set we seemed to find our focus and play a higher level of volleyball.   As a coach it is always nice to see another gear, especially tonight when they seemed point for point with us each of the sets.  I thought Bailey battled through the night, playing great defense, passing very well, and finding success on the net.  Mikenna was also a player who had an important impact with blocks, her aggressive serves, and her ability to compete.  Korrie, of course, set pretty well tonight, and tried to keep things balanced with multiple hitters having quality swings.  We also saw our defense take steps forward.  Grace and Olivia Otto had some great reads on defense and we are glad they are getting better at trusting their instincts.  That will help us in the end.  Overall a solid win tonight.  Hillcrest helped us get better and played a strong match.”

“There were some really good moments for us defensively and we handled a lot of their strong attacks better than last season, however, our serving was a major struggle serving only 64%,”
reported Hillcrest Head Coach Debi Foss. “While we had some strong plays at the net, our hitting offense never got going and we had limited opportunities. We continue to work through ‘inexperience’ but the girls are motivated to keep working.”

The Comets attack was led by Anna Brumfield (4 kills, 1 block, 1 block kill), Emily Adams (3 kills, 1 block kill) and Hope Adams (3 kills).  Madi Foss (2 kills, 6 digs), Mack Foss (2 kills, 17 digs, 4 service points), Audra Ewan (8 set assists), Madison Ballweg (2 set assists, 3 serving points), Natalie Zwiers (1 block kill).

“I want to say congratulations to Outside Hitter Bailey Schaefer of Brandon-Evansville who reached 1000 Kills for her career."
